Ken Clarke on the writing of “Man For Our Time”...

“When my good friend Alan Leach told me about a sermon he'd just heard on the prophet Elijah and said it would make a good subject for a musical something seemed to click in my brain. For the next six months it was my major preoccupation until the first draft was completed. The result was “Man For Our Time” - The story of Elijah in music and verse.

It is about a time in the history of Israel when its most wicked king, Ahab, and his wife Jezebel forced the people to worship a false god, or idol, called Baal. Those who remained faithful to Jehovah, the God of the Bible, were either killed or forced to hide. Elijah survived a three and a half year drought and triumphed in a showdown in which fire from heaven showed who was the one true God. Then he suffered an inexplicable down-turn in his spiritual life before God renewed his strength and his faith. Elijah performed miracles, spoke out for social justice and was finally taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, one of only two men ever to enter heaven without passing through death.

In the morning, a new hope shines out from the new day...

Just every once in a while God sends a man for our time...

How bright the radiant star of grace against the darkest sky of guilt...

In my country new voices can sing a new song...

We all rejoice in God our King: He gives us freedom at last!”
