LOOK AT ME THAT WAY

We all need some recognition, don't we?
Need to be appreciated, wouldn't you agree?

What are you staring at
Face in the mirror
Why do you look at me
So disapprovingly
You know the dreams
That this little girl used to dream
But what right does that give you
To judge my life today?
I know I've come a long way down
You know my life is upside down

Don't make me turn away
Why must you
Look at me that way?

It didn't take me long to notice
As soon as I began to grow
The multitude of men around me
It didn't take me long to know
They made it clear just what they wanted
And not a lot for me to say

I didn't need to ask:
'Why do they
Look at me that way?'

One day I watched a happy family
Out for an early evening walk
He looked at her with eyes so tender
They seemed content to laugh and talk
They were so happy with each other
And sharing with their child at play

Then I turned to my man:
'Why don't you
Look at me that way?'

But that's when I was soft and gentle
Life's made me so much harder now
No point in being sentimental
I just had to survive (and how!)
I love to be the main attraction
Well, I deserve it anway

So I just say 'Come on'
And let them
Look at me that way

But there's one man
Who looks right through me
No hint of physical desire
What is the power that's getting to me?
(What would you call it?) Holy Fire!

No I won't take his condemnation
I'm goin' to just refuse to budge
I can't abide his conversation
He's go to learn: he's not my judge

He's goin' to get what's coming to him
There's goin' to be a price to pay

I've got to make the point
Nobody
Looks at me that way

What are you staring at
Face in the mirror?

Don't make me turn away
Why do you
Look at me that way?
