LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

I left the shores of England,
For a place I'd never seen,
Lured by romantic notions of
The all American dream,
To travel on the Greyhound Bus,
Or even Amtrak train,
To the places we've all heard about,
The ones with famous names.

Well I started off in Texas,
And imagine my surprise,
As the bus pulled into 'Ding Dong',
A town of no small size,
'Lick Skillett'was the next stop,
And then 'Why Not' Mississippi,
Well the next time that I'm down there,
I'll miss it and shout 'Yippee'.

America, America, the land of opportunity,
America, America, where the place names verge on lunacy.

North Carolina state line,
Was the next one that I crossed,
The bus rolled down a dirt road,
I was certain we were lost,
Past 'Stiffknee Knob' - just how I felt,
After travelling for a week,
Then the temperature dropped rapidly,
As we stopped in 'Coldass Creek'.

America, America, the land of opportunity,
America, America, where the place names verge on lunacy.

Then on to Pennsylvania,
And things were looking good,
We stopped in a place called 'Intercourse',
I'd wondered if we should,
Was this the climax of your trip?
I hear you people say,
Sadly 'Climax' is in Michigan,
One hundred miles away.

America, America, the land of opportunity,
America, America, where the place names verge on lunacy.

On towards the Wild West,
My journey kept on roaming,
Through 'What Cheer' down in Iowa,
And westward to Wyoming,
I knew the time had come to leave,
As I passed 'Dead Bastard Peak',
And on to 'Maggies Nipples',
The place name of the week.

America, America, the land of opportunity,
America, America, where the place names verge on lunacy.
