CITIZEN OF THE WORLD
Celebrating the birth of a child,
So innocent and undefiled,
The whole world over people sing,
Whether commoner or king.
So welcome,
Black, white, yellow, boy or girl,
Welcome, citizen of the world.
People are travellin' from far, far away,
They're bringin' you gifts for your birthday;
Some bring sorrow, some bring joy
For the newborn girl or boy.
So welcome...
For the first world child, a gift of gold,
A gift of hope for the child who's bold,
But the third world child, with his openin' breath
Takes in the reek of death.
So welcome...
Oh innocents, what have we done
With the fragile earth to which you've come?
Will your children's children still forgive,
Will they have a chance to live?
So welcome...
